MTV News spoke to a trio of 'Factor' experts about the departures of Nicole Scherzinger, Paula Abdul and Steve Jones.

Reactions to the departures of "X Factor" host Steve Jones and judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul seem to run the gamut from "all but expected" (that would be poor Jonesy, who never truly seemed to find his footing as emcee) to "jaw-dropping shock" (that's the consensus over Abdul's axing, especially since show producers made it seem that she and Simon Cowell were a tandem deal).
And while folks can debate how the trio's exits will impact the show, seemingly everyone can agree that, when "X Factor" returns for its second season later this year, it will most certainly be a very different show — one that faces an uphill battle to not only win over viewers, but deliver on the promises Cowell made when it first debuted.
"This is a new beginning, this is hitting reset," Detroit News pop music writer and MTV News contributor Adam Graham said Tuesday (January 31). "I never thought the changes were going to be this drastic. ... I think it means that [the producers] are serious, and I think it means that they've acknowledged that they haven't delivered the product they hoped to, and going through a change like this means they want to make it better and they want to deliver on the promise of this big show that many view as a failure, especially after Simon Cowell made all these proclamations about it when it first premiered."
"I think [Scherzinger and Jones] were both marked for death by early December, if not Thanksgiving, and I would have been shocked if either one of them came back," added Michael Slezak, who covers reality TV for TVLine.com. "I don't think Paula did a terrible job ... [and] I think her getting the ax sends a much bigger message, like, 'We're not just going to make a couple of little changes. We're pretty much reinventing the show from the ground up.' "
So where does "X Factor" go from here? Well, for starters, it has to find some folks to replace the recently departed trio — a task that may be easier said than done, given the show's rather rocky first season.
"There's rumors that [Cowell] wants to bring Mariah Carey on. ... Simon's always had this idea that 'X Factor' was going to be like 'American Idol' on steroids, so getting someone like Mariah would be huge," said Lyndsey Parker, managing editor of Yahoo! Music. "But I don't know if she would do it, because is the show now considered a sinking ship? I think the image of 'X Factor' is a little tarnished; the ratings weren't what Simon said they were going to be. I have doubts about how successful any of the people who got signed from the show are going to be, so now, I think a little bit of the cachet of joining Simon's new venture, when they're already making massive cast switch ups one season in."
"I think where Simon is at in his career, it wouldn't shock me if he just goes for a big name ... but you can get the biggest star in the world, you can get someone who hosted the Oscars, like Ellen DeGeneres, and they still can't handle giving live criticism," Slezak said. "It's one thing to be a big-name star; it's another thing to be fast enough on TV to be able to watch a 90-second performance, be able to form an opinion immediately and then give a quick, succinct, honest assessment of that performance and to be willing to do that."
And frankly, it may not matter who Cowell and company bring in for the second season of the show. If you listen to those who covered it, the damage may have already been done, and the abrupt dumping of three members of the on-air team may not be enough to turn the tide.
"In a lot of ways, I think all of this is sort of a real acknowledgement that 'X Factor' failed and needs a complete reinvention," Graham said. "I don't know if just getting rid of three people is enough to do that."
"There's no doubt that there's reality-competition fatigue right now. ... It's almost like there's just too many types of these shows on the air, and it's basically year-round," Slezak added. "They've got to convince people that it's worth investing their whole fall to watching it and convince people that they've changed enough to deserve a second chance. Now they're up against it, and the fact that it wasn't a huge phenomenon like 'American Idol' makes it easier to ignore."
Will "X Factor" ever live up to the hype? Well, for the time being at least, the high-profile departures have certainly returned the public's focus to the show. The real key to its survival seems to be what Cowell does next.
"In the short term, if you believe any publicity is good publicity, people are talking about 'X Factor' for perhaps the first time since the finale. And there's going to be a lot of people speculating and debating about who they'd like to see replace Steve and Paula and Nicole," Parker said. "Changes to shows always get people talking ... but in the long term, if they run into more chemistry problems again, I think the show is going to be considered a bit of a joke. So I hope Simon casts the show wisely."

'My next baby will be my new record,' singer says of her own motherhood plans.

Lady Gaga and Beyoncé are besties, and when the Mother Monster sat down with "The Insider," she gushed about her pal's skills as a soon-to-be mommy.
"Of course she is [going to be a good mom]. That's a tremendous understatement," the singer said. "She's the nicest female I've met in the industry. She's wonderful!" The two have quite the history together. Gaga and Beyoncé have appeared on two tracks (and in two videos) together for "Telephone" and "Video Phone." And while Beyoncé is nearing motherhood, Gaga admits she wants to wait a bit longer before giving birth to anything — but new music, that is. "Someday. Long, long day from now!" she said. "My next baby will be my new record." When MTV News caught up with Gaga last month, she opened up about her plans to release the follow-up to Born This Way. "I've started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place," she told MTV News. But much like Beyoncé and her baby, a due date for the Mother Monster's next album is still to be determined. "I'm excited to put it out, but it's not done yet. So I'll put it out when it's done." Meanwhile, one psychic who spoke to MTV News helped us try to nail down just when we should expect Jayoncé's baby. "I feel that Beyoncé's 2012 is going to be very, very exciting," Jesse Bravo told MTV News. "I get the date of January 8 to January 14 of her giving birth to her first son."

The ENVY all those Twi-Hards must have felt when Reese Witherspoon locked lips with Robert Pattinson!!! OMG we can't even begin to imagine!!
Well, scratch that... we'd totally switch places with her too, LOL!!!
But seriously, it seems like Reese had LOADS of fuNN working with R-Patz and here's why!!
When asked what he's like in real life, Reese says:
I would say [he is] the hardest-working person I've ever worked with, honestly. [He's] professional, hard-working, so appreciative, more grateful than I've ever seen anyone for where he is in life.
I've never experienced what he has — going to premieres and there's just millions of people waiting for him to touch them. I think it must be strange, but I don't even know how to process what he deals with and Kristen deals with. I don't know.
WoWW!! That's crazy!!
We mean, this gurl has done a rolling roster of films, okay!?! She's worked with A LOT of people. So to call R-Patz the hardest worker in that pile, that says A LOT about him!!
Congrats, Robberz!! This will probably land ya a few more gigs, LOL!! We know producers LOVE hearing stuff like this!!!

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark introduced their new baby girl on Friday (January 27). Their daughter - born on January 24 - was shown to photographers as Princess Marie and her parents left Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.
The baby's almost 2-year-old brother Prince Henrik and half-brothers Prince Nikolai, 12, and Prince Felix, 9, had already met their new sister during a hospital visit on January 25.
Congratulations are in order for British royals Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, because today we learn that the couple have adopted a new member into their family! Apparently, this member of the British royal family has been around since at least the start of this month and is only a few months old … but today palace officials have confirmed the adoption! Click below to see the first photo of Wills, Kate and the newest member of their family.

The new arrival became a talking point among royal fans and commentators when he was spotted dashing around the feet of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during a beach stroll in Wales earlier this month. And now, the couple’s palace handlers have finally confirmed what was suspected: the adorable addition is the pair’s new pet. A palace source says the adopted puppy – a male – is a “few months old,” is a black cocker spaniel and comes from a litter “with a close family connection.” The Middletons are known to fancy spaniels. The Westminster Kennel Club had earlier told PEOPLE that the cocker spaniel looked to be about 10 weeks old. With a name still to be announced, the puppy will no doubt help Kate deal with William’s absence when he heads for a deployment to the Falkland Islands, in the south Atlantic for six weeks. And he may be good successor to William’s dog Widgeon, a black Labrador who passed away about two years ago.
Aww, isn’t this the cutest? At this point, we don’t know the name of this little dude or dudette but now that the word is out that Wills and Kate have a new pet pooch, I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about him/her very soon. I have to say … the adoption of a dog is just PERFECT timing right now for the young couple. Folks are chomping at the bit for the pair to have a baby … but I think the time is just right for the addition of a pet dog, especially with Wills‘s imminent military deployment. This is just really happy news … congrats and love goes out to the newly expanded family.

YBF Chick Raven Symone just landed a new gig. And this one's on Broadway! Get the deets inside, plus Tyler Perry's eyebrow-raising casting decision for his new movie, Madea's Witness Protection...
Raven's bringing her animated and "extra" personality and voice to the big stage again. The 26-year-old was just cast as the lead role in Broadway's adaptation of the musical Sister Act, which opened last April. Deadline reports she's taking over as the new Deloris Van Cartier, the role originated on the silver screen by Whoopi Goldberg. Raven starts rehearsals in February and takes the stage the end of March at the Broadway Theater. Congrats to her!
Fun fact: Raven made her Broadway debut when she was 5...singing with the Boys Choir of Harlem.

Speaking of youngins landing big roles, 22-year-old Romeo Miller (son of Master P and co-star of Jumping The Broom) was just cast as the co-lead in Tyler Perry's umpteenth Madea movie.
The former "Dancing With The Stars" cutie will star in Madea's Witness Protection--Tyler's fourth movie of 2012 (and 14th movie in 7 years). That man Mr. Perry does not quit.
And since Tyler is good for casting folks we haven't seen in a while, he's brought on Marla Gibbs ("227"), John Amos ("Good Times"), Eugene Levy (American Pie), Denise Richards, and Tom Arnold.
The synopsis of the movie:
Eugene Levy stars in the film as George, a high level CFO at the center of a Ponzi scheme in New York City who is enrolled in the Witness Protection program along with his family in the one place that absolutely no one will think to look for them: Madea's house down South.
Romeo Miller stars as Jake, a friend of Brian (an attorney who places the family in Madea's care, also played by Tyler Perry) who was affected by the scam; Amos as Jake's (Romeo Miller's) father in the film, and Gibbs appears as Madea's neighbor.
Tyler's other movie, Good Deeds, starring Gabby Union and Thandie Newton, hits theaters February 24th.

'We're coming with something that people are going to want to tune in to see,' Diddy tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman
Diddy alert! The music mogul isn't making an official announcement concerning his upcoming music-themed cable channel, but when the time is right, you can bet that his patented Diddy swag will be in full swing.
"I haven't made that announcement yet. That's something that kinda leaked to the press," the Bad Boy CEO told Sway on Sunday in Miami while on a break from shooting French Montana's "Shot Caller" remix video.
Broadcasting & Cable originally broke the news January 23, citing unnamed sources. It was reported that Puff hooked up with former MTV programming chief Andy Schuon to develop Revolt, a network aimed at African-American audiences, set to launch in December. Diddy couldn't confirm any of the information, however.
"When I have everything officially solidified, I'll be able to speak on it more. Only thing I can say is, we're coming with a new energy, we're coming with something that people are going to want to tune in to see," he said.
Diddy went on to cite the influence that Viacom networks MTV and BET have had on his career. "We want to give thanks to MTV and BET for paving the way," he said. "Somebody had to bubble, somebody had to come up out of the grind of working with the greats over at MTV and BET, and I thank y'all for all the support. MTV gave me my first shot, made me a global star."

Selena Gomez on the cover of Cosmopolitan
Photo: Cosmopolitan
Selena Gomez turns the big 2-0 later this year, and she seems to be leaving her tween image behind. The 19-year-old is the latest teen star to appear on the cover of Cosmopolitan, following last month's issue of the women's magazine, featuring 17-year-old Dakota Fanning.
For her first cover for the magazine, Gomez dons a low-cut, floral-print dress as she looks rather seductively into the camera. She's sitting with her one leg perched in front of her body, displaying a saucier side of herself than fans might be used to seeing.
Inside the issue, she's talking all about love, opening up about her longtime boyfriend, Justin Bieber. "I'm just like every 19-year-old girl," she said. "If you're in love, you're in love to the fullest, and you just want to go to the movies, hang out, and be as normal as possible. I'm fortunate that I've found someone who has that philosophy."
In another Cosmo quote floating around online, Gomez dishes on a past boyfriend (Taylor Lautner? Nick Jonas?) who didn't make things as easy on her. "I was in a relationship previously where I had to hide everything and it wasn't my choice. I had to go through different exits and take separate cars and do the craziest things, and it just really wasn't worth it," she explained. "It was like a year of my life completely wasted."
The more mature magazine cover comes as Gomez prepares for the next phase of her career. In the coming weeks, she'll hit the set for her next film, the more adult-themed "Spring Breakers," which follows a group of college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. When they land in jail, a drug and arms dealer bails them out, and they quickly become entangled with him and his business.
"It's a different character than I have ever played before," she told MTV News about the film, which will be directed by "Kids" mastermind Harmony Korine. "It's a different kind of vibe I think than people are used to seeing me in. What you're going to see is more raw, I think. It's going to be raw and more about acting."
What do you think about Selena's grown-up image? Let us know in the comments!

While most athletes are having a pre-game dinner or pre-game talks or other rituals, Heat star LeBron James is biking his way to work. Pics of Bron Bron pedaling his way down the Miami streets inside...
Miami Heat superstar forward LeBron James was spotted riding his bike to work Sunday afternoon ahead of his game against the Chicago Bulls.
Because of the Miami marathon, traffic was busy around the AmericanAirlines Arena before the game. So to ensure he got to work on time and for a pre-game workout, the newly engaged Mr. James rode with two of his associates to the arena.

Of course some fans had to hop in the pics. Wonder what those drivers were thinking when they looked out their window and saw a giant pedaling next to them.
But the bike ride must have helped--LeBron scored 35 points and a 97-93 win over the Bulls.
